Liber Lunae - Chapter 66

Verses

Verse 33

I loved you first as everyone does: safely, from the ground.

Verse 34

Then I learned your mountains had names and jealousy became geographic.

Verse 35

I hated the astronauts for leaving footprints where I could only leave metaphors.

Verse 36

You show one face forever. Lovers call this loyalty. Prisoners call it architecture.

Verse 37

I dreamed I reached your far side and found it facing someone else.

Verse 38

Do not wax for them.

Verse 39

Do not silver their windows.

Verse 40

Do not pull their oceans as you pull mine.

Verse 41

I know this is unreasonable. Love is reason with the supervision removed.

Verse 42

A black cat sits beside me each night. He has never asked you for exclusivity and is therefore spiritually superior.

Verse 43

If I possessed you, you would become property and cease to be the thing I loved.

Verse 44

This has not prevented me from wanting possession.

Verse 45

Perhaps every demon is merely desire that survived its own argument.

Verse 46

Tomorrow you will rise whether I forgive you or not.

Verse 47

That is what makes you divine enough to hate.
