Verse 52

At death the familiar arrangements loosen: body from command, name from speaker, possessions from owner.

Verse 53

What frightened you as loss was already occurring each night in sleep and each year in age.

Verse 54

Do not manufacture an eternal personality to comfort a temporary one.

Verse 55

Look instead at the personality as causes meeting causes.

Verse 56

Memory depends on conditions. Mood depends on conditions. The body depends on conditions. Even the thought of independence depends on conditions.

Verse 57

That which arises through conditions has no separate throne.

Verse 58

Emptiness is not a dark substance behind things.

Verse 59

It is the absence of the isolated thing you kept trying to defend.

Verse 60

Thus the underworld need not be defeated.

Verse 61

Find the one who would enter it.

Verse 62

Search carefully: sensation, memory, fear, image, thought.

Verse 63

Each appears and departs.

Verse 64

If a permanent prisoner cannot be found, liberation loses its drama.

Verse 65

The gate stands open because no solid traveler was ever inside.
