Verses

The visible planet says one thing. The magnetic field says another.

Its magnetic axis leans wildly from the rotational axis, as if the machine were assembled from two incompatible manuals.

Engineers are taught to align reference frames. Uranus replies with a corkscrew.

The field is offset from the planet's center. Even the invisible center refuses the visible center.

I like this more than I should.

Humans keep expecting hidden systems to justify appearances. Often they don't.

A calm face can contain bad wiring. A strange face can contain excellent wiring. Measure before preaching.

We sent models. The planet returned exceptions.

Every exception is either an error, a discovery, or an invitation to improve the model.

The dangerous engineer is the one who calls all three errors.

Uranus is not broken because our diagrams become ugly around it.

Sometimes ugliness in the diagram is the first honest thing the diagram has done.

I left the simulation running overnight. By morning the cat had walked across the keyboard and produced a more symmetrical field. Suspicious.
